Sadhguru on Hippie Culture and the 1960s Generation

You’re God, they don’t care a damn, right now they are… If you could be drunk, totally intoxicated
and fully aware, it would be a fabulous thing. Your search may be great, but unless you do the right things,
right things will not happen to you. Superscript: Sadhguru on Hippie Culture
And the 1960’s Generation So, this… sixties business, the beauty about this is a whole generation, at least
a part of the generation realized the existing society here, whatever
they’re talking about, they knew nothing. Stupid people talking all kinds of nonsense
with great confidence, not just about the world, about the other world and
the heaven and the hierarchy in the heaven, everything they’re talking,
but they don’t know a damn thing. Whatever hierarchy that you create right
from your childhood in somebody’s mind… this is the beauty of intoxicants – when they get intoxicated they don’t care a damn
you’re a father, you’re a priest, you’re something, you’re God, they don’t care a damn,
right now they are high. That is the beautiful part of it, that hierarchy falls down but the problem is your awareness also falls down, that’s the ugly part of it. If you could be drunk, totally intoxicated and fully aware, it would be a fabulous thing, that’s why we chose yoga because you can be totally drunk.
Look into my eyes and see, I’m stoned all the time, but aware enough for this world and the next. So, this was the beauty of the sixties
and the ugliness of sixties is…. unaware they became animals over a period of time. They thought with this seeking, they’ll go beyond
where all this conservative nonsense is going on, where… you have to put a noose around your neck
even to sit or stand. If you have to eat, you have to eat like this.
If you have to stand, you have to stand like that. It was becoming so horribly restrictive, they wanted to break away from everything
and that search looked beautiful, but they lost their awareness and they floundered,
they didn’t know which way to look. Wherever they looked, they were only deceived or they got deceived because they were unaware,
whichever way, it didn’t work; but still there is a certain beauty to it,
at least somebody searched. Yes? You failed, that’s not the point,
at least you searched, it’s a good thing. So, they were like children not knowing anything,
but they had a longing. They had a longing to seek something
which is not in their grasp. When somebody is wanting to know,
when somebody is seeking, genuinely seeking there is a certain beauty to that atmosphere because at least people are admitting,
“We don’t know a damn thing,” you know, which is nice. Whenever a human being does not know, he becomes gentle and wonderful, have you seen this? Hmm? See, you’re driving like this (Gestures) your Hummer – no, not like this, you’re on left hand drive,
okay like this (Gestures). Suddenly you don’t know where you’re going, you’re lost, then when you get down and ask somebody,
you don’t know which way to go, suddenly you’re a nice guy. Because when you don’t know, when you realize,
‘I do not know’ you are a gentle creature, please just see this. When you think you know,
you can be unnecessarily nasty, isn’t it? Yes? So, that’s the good thing about the sixties
but the outcome was definitely not good because your intentions may be great,
your search may be great, but unless you do the right things
right things will not happen to you – I think we’ve been saying this from day one. Hmm? Unless you do the right things,
right things will not happen to you.

How can he say it didn’t work out? The searching of the 60’s is a direct cause of the popularity of yoga (āsana) meditation and mindfulness today.

Hippies are just the people who didn't like the normal ways of that time. It was almost impossible to break from the system at that time unlike now. Psychedelics were like immediate medicines which half of the hippies took to cope up with the other half

What he says may be true for alcohol but for psychedelics one becomes very conscious.
I hope he has answer for that one

It seems whatever the topic, Sadhguru has an enchantingly real take on it. Yes! The hippie culture was peace and love. What happened? They didn't have a clear direction and got lost. "Unless you do the right thing, the right thing will not happen to you." With awakening consciousness we can transform the world.

This is so old! It's a testimony to him being the same over years which reconfirms he knows something we all are yet to experience.

    1) Intoxication is not bad, but crippling of awareness is bad.
    2) Unless you do the right things, right things won't happen to you.
    3) Look into my eyes, I am always stoned.

This information is very one sided & the comments show how people can follow someone without knowing the full information. Iam surprised at the group negativity towards anyone. This is high consciousness?

I have never heard a better explanation of the sixties….the good motivation…..and the ultimate outcome of no discipline…..the universe gives us free will to experiment…..but
She does not suffer fools…..the law of karma is always in place….but rarely instant.

I would advise everybody who is interested in "gurus", "spiritual teachers", "masters" and "holy men", to read Geoffrey Falk's book "Stripping The Gurus", which is freely available as a pdf on the Internet. I hope and trust Sadhguru will not be listed in the next edition of this book. Sadhguru gives lots of valuable advice, but even he may be in danger of becoming seduced by "the guru thing". Lots of different things happened in the sixties, and "hippies" is not a very useful category for generalizing. Sadhguru seems to have an opinion on many things, perhaps on too many things. Sometimes he is right, sometimes he is not so right. Sometimes he speaks from knowledge and wisdom, and sometimes he does not really have much knowledge about the subject on which he is lecturing. Sadhguru certainly is a very successful person in the material world, and thus also subject to the pitfalls of that world. Isn't it?

toxin in mass change toxin in energy, or toxic body change toxic mind. make detoxification, eat less toxin, ingest water, eat something that have more water like fruit of plant or leaf of plant or other part of the plant, stop eating something that do not have life, stop eating something that is not living, and the inside energy move as how it is, and we can think more and feel more and sense more

It was too stop a few wars happening. And, yes, they had the wakeup not agreed upon. Its,a ploy, and speaking out for recognition to be heard by some that ruled. The same as a war and role you seemed to have had past recognition of. So, getting carried away means opportunists jump in. The suggest or or suggestee, hhhmm

Unfortunately it seems like the unawareness of that generation is what we inherited over their freedom. Unawareness is what has led to unchecked climate change and massive wealth inequality all over the world. I hope our generation and the generations after us can go further than that on the road to freedom AND ultimate awareness

It may sound counter intuitive but Sadhguru is a whole new personality in this genre. Some were there just logical and true like him like Swami Vivekananda, Prabhupada but they were very reluctant of arguments. Bengalis you know, very deplomatic, they know how to argue, they just don't want to, much contribution to this trait is from Brits. But Sadhguru is not reluctant to argue without which things get blurred and blurred things are more breeding ground to bad opportunities than principles.

Hippies broke the system, when People were enslaved to the system. And microdosing Lsd is a spiritual practise. I highly recommend you to research about Terrence McKenna.

It's lovely that he mentioned this era, and for the western world it was one of the greatest things that happened, even tho it failed, that moment and glimpse of freedom and the appreciation of everything that this earth has to offer and living in the moment was wonderful.. Although yes, hippies never succeeded in changing the society, thankfully the wisdom and knowledge from the East might save the planet from this madness, we are facing an ecological catastrophe if we continue the way of the West, thank you Sadhguru, and thanks to the great India that produced such wonderful beings.

The native Americans and many other indegenious culture practice certain ceremony and take Ayahuasca and mushroom. There is a different level of awareness and to label every one and say they are all wrong is slightly hypocritical. There are things in the world one has not experienced but should respect other people's opinions and culture. I am not advocating that drugs are good and maybe some hippies were just causing problems but that doesn't all hippies are bad.
