The unseen face of meth use

“Methamphetamine –” “This is what i do to motivate myself, a little
bit.” “A drug that was also known for a while
as redneck cocaine. “A little bit … Rrrah.” Dr. Perry Halkitis: “Believed to be only used by hicks in rural areas. They use it, but so do gay men in urban centers.” Courtney: “– a lot of people use it for
sex –” “As a way of sort of enhancing their lives,
enhancing their partying.” “But no I do it, and I channel my inner
passions. So here we go, lets turn up.” Over 11 million Americans have tried meth
at least once. “You ready world?” “My name is Courtney, I’m 29.” The same data says that 440,000 were last-month
users. But this is all data from 2012. It’s use is likely still on the rise, according
to DEA meth seizure data. “I am a functioning drug addict.” “There we go.” Crystal Meth is extremely addictive, and Courtney
has been addicted for 5 years. “Would you like to get the booty bump on camera
too? ” And use among gay men happens at a higher
rate than other users. “It’s very difficult to try to get our hands
on what proportion of gay men are actually using meth, but I think it’s safe to say based
on a cross-section of the studies that have been published, gay men are overrepresented
in the population of methamphetamine users. That’s called a health disparity in public
health research.” “With this drug, what it’s known for is bringing
out the uninhibitedness of your inner, like, sex beast, I guess you could say.” And it’s not exactly a secret in the gay community.
There’s actually a term for it – Party and play, or PNP. “To describe the association between engaging
in sex and using drugs.” “Nine times out of ten it is meth when you’re
‘partying.'” “The reason that meth use allows individuals
to stay up for two days or three days and have marathon sex is because its speed. ” Meth has been seen as a causing factor of
HIV, but Dr. Halkitis’ research and Courtney’s experience suggest something more complicated
is happening. “I felt I’ve been gay since I was like two
or three. I would dress up in my gradmother’s high heels, and put on my grandmother’s dresses.” Growing up, Courtney was rejected by his father
and turned to sex chat lines in search of a male mentor. I’ve been having sex since I was
like 12 with grown men. He said he had slept with over 50 people, half adult men, by the
age of 14. “That’s abuse, that’s sexual abuse.” By 21 years old, Courtney found out he was
HIV-positive. And three years later, he tried meth for the first time. “I was 24 years old, in Atlanta, Georgia,
I had broken up with my ex, I found out I was HIV-positive. It’s like nothing mattered
to me. I wanted to get away, I wanted to take my mind off of me being positive. It took
the hurt away. In the most part.” In a 2014 study, Dr. Halkitis found that 65%
of HIV-positive men started using meth a few years contracting the disease. Halkitis: “There’s a theory that argues
the higher number of memberships in minority groups you have, the more likely you are to
have health consequences. Because you are living in a society that discriminates against
you, or stigmatizes you because of your race, because of your sexual orientation, because
of your HIV status, and because of your economic needs. And taken together those four factors
create a reality for someone that is not a particularly nice reality. And so methamphetamine
provides a very quick and easy escape from day-to-day living.” After 5 years, Courtney is finally telling
family members about his addiction and trying to stop. “It just took until now for him to really come out to let us know. So
basically now, like I said, it’s just doing more things on helping him quit.” But of course, quitting and staying clean
is a struggle. The typical treatment for meth addition is behavioral therapy. Basically, Alcoholics Anonymous for
meth. And at the park with his cousin, Courtney bumped into a former heroin addict who had
similar advice. “September 4th. 7 years. How long for you
— oh, are you — ” “I’m currently using.” “It’s uh, an everyday, — uh — a process.” “Yeah man. That’s why meetings. Even just
talking to people who have a similar problem is it. It’s an [isolating] disease Being clean
is the greatest, the best thing that ever happened to me.” “Sobriety is something you gotta want to do.
You gotta wanna be sober. You gotta wanna take those steps to move forward and have a functioning life. Drugs, they ruin
people, they ruin lives. Do you want to get sober? “Of course. I will get sober. Not wanting
to. I will. Again.”

Cheyanne Harris did Meth and killed her four-month-old baby boy by "forgetting" about him. He died of starvation, dehydration and diaper rash.

His dead body was found in a baby swing soaked with urine and wearing a diaper that hadn't been changed in 9-14 days. The feces covered diaper had attracted flies that laid eggs which grew into maggots.

    RIP Sterling Silver Koehne!

Almost 5 months clean off meth and man I miss it. I miss it a ton but I finally have something to lose. Something I don’t want to lose and thankfully that was enough for me to stop. ( besides almost overdosing painfully )

Nobody cared, as long as hicks, gays, and blacks used it. But once rich whites used it — OH GOD, METH CRISIS.

Meth is actually available legally by doctors prescription – google "Desoxyn" that's the name brand of it and people take it as an alternative to adderall and it does help a lot of people who suffer from ADD, the key is NOT ABUSING the stuff. Anything in moderation may be good – its when you overdo it that it creates problems.

I never used meth before but my pain doctor got angry with me and stopped my pain pills just like that. Motorcycle so I tried to get with other doctors and they didn't want to see me they said I had too much going on. So I ended up using the math for the pain. It works amazingly. But I don't want to be doing this forever so hopefully I will find some pain doctor to help me and I will be able to stop.

We all have problems. We should take responsibility for our lives and not retreat into quick fixes like meth and alcohol. I’ve done the same. I’m not innocent. I just know what I need to do… thoughts and prayers are appreciated. Thanks 🙏

When you go into the darkness so deep whether it's knowingly or unknowingly it's not easy to get back out.

But it is possible I haven't done meth in 28 years

Just my personal opinion, but I kinda wish they didn't have to use a stereotypical gay man for this interview. There are LOTS of gay and bisexual men who act and dress opposite of this fellow. Unfortunately, they are not the ones mainstream audiences imagine when they think of gay sex, and continuing to give us the stereotype does NOT help.

If you're on it and you start seeing faces everywhere, you need to stop immediately. If you continue you will start hearing voices that criticise you 24/7. You will need antipsychotics and to come off the drug altogether.

PnP is the worst of type of gay men most of them can't get hard and they're reckless but the way the system is set up it makes it so much easier for them to get off than hetereo people.

it's really on the individual to let it end up ruining your life. I mean I take it in moderation usually for my shifts11-12 hour shifts at work that is really physically demanding or recreationally once or twice a week. My bills are paid, I have a roof over my head. I don't know I just hate that stigma that all users are burn out losers. My 2 cents.

What’s the difference between Meth and Crystal Meth? I never used any drugs, but it’s good to know about it more so we can help others that struggle with that.

Everyone knows meth is bad for you. If you decide to pick up Meth as a habit, then you either break it or it breaks you. Welcome to real life. No sympathy from me at all.

This guys theory on "prejudice" caused meth addiction is debunk when you see how many white people are on it. Just another way to play the "victim" card.
