in many traditions we hear of the third
eye what is it and is it important for meditation today we’re going to find out
hi there our meditator welcome to episode 38 of master your mind daily a
series of videos all about meditation anxiety and personal growth
my name is Giovanni Dienstmann I am the author of practical meditation and the
creator of liveanddare.com one of the five most popular meditation
blogs on the web so today we are talking about the third eye and third eye
meditations first I’d like to start with a question do you believe that there
exists and that it’s connected to intuition if so please write yes in the
comments and if no please right now so the third eye is the space between
eyebrows and it’s actually connected to the middle of the brain in line with
this which is the pineal gland the pineal gland the carts used to think
that the pineal gland is the seat of the soul he believed in that and we find
symbology about the importance of the pineal gland in the Egyptian tradition
the Greeks even in early Christianity and of course in Buddhism and Hinduism
in the dowload tradition in China almost everywhere
all of these cultures and people who didn’t really have much contact with
each other if any at all they speak of the same third eye the same point so the
first thing to keep in mind is that this third eye is not really in the physical
body we can concentrate and meditate on the third eye by focusing on this spot
of the body or by focusing on the center of the brain which is very difficult to
find it’s a spot in the center of the brain and usually only when you have
meditated in this spot for a very long time that you’re able to feel that spot
so it’s not in the physical body even though we can access it through the
physical body it’s actually in the energy body so to speak it’s it’s an
energetic feeling in that part and all the traditions say that it’s connected
with intuition wisdom willpower self-control imagination purity
transcendence of ego etc in a way it’s a state of mind it’s a
state of consciousness and whenever we sit to meditate or whenever we do
spiritual practices we are stimulating that Center but there are some spiritual
practices there are some meditation practices that more directly stimulate
the third eye and maybe this makes sense for you or maybe you don’t believe in
any of this and that’s fine but I would just say just try this practice try one
of the third eye practices and see what it does for you if it’s helpful then you
can continue whether the third eye exists or doesn’t exist if you follow
the practice and it gives you benefit then continue and if it doesn’t then try
another meditation practice in my way of teaching I always teach in a way that
people who are interested in spirituality and people who are skeptics
or atheists or do not believe in spirituality both of them can be
benefited from most of these techniques so how do you actually meditate on the
third eye and in the book I show a few different techniques so you can get the
book to learn a little bit more or you can join my limitless life program to
learn these and other techniques step by step and with my support but here is an
overview for you to try by yourself if you would like the simplest way to
meditate on the third eye is to feel this area of your body
so rather than meditating on a mantra or on the breath you meditate on this area
of your body and if you like you can press your finger against that area or
lick your finger and and put it here so that it kind of sensitizes that area
that will help you to keep the focus in meditation so that’s one way of doing it
just feeling that area the second way is feeling that area in repeating a mantra
and the mantra that is most often associated with the third eye is the
mantra ohm for many reasons that I don’t have time to get into right now but it’s
also very short and simple mantra that everyone can use so in this way of doing
the third eye meditation you would focus all your awareness in the space between
the eyebrows and you would repeat the mantra all in your mind
imagining that you are repeating it from that spot from that place and try to
keep a rhythm so you’re always repeating it with the same length and interval and
if you do that while focusing on the third eye I eventually will get to an
experience that’s as if this area is throbbing with ohm like a pulsation like
a heartbeat that’s really good sign it it shows that you have progressed in
this meditation now a third way to meditate on the third eye is by actually
gazing in that spot so you would close your eyes and you move your eyes up and
center towards this spot and only do that for a few seconds in
the beginning and increase very very gradually otherwise even if you are hard
headache so this is a little bit more advanced and and that’s why I say only
do it for a few seconds but it’s also very powerful you will feel a calming
effect on your mind so it’s basically looking centered and up towards the
space between the eyebrows with your eyes closed and of course if you want to
can also combine a mantra and repeat the mantra while you’re doing that do it for
a few seconds maximum one minute then relax the ice and keep focusing on this
area then do it again for one minute and you can go like this for several rounds
and as you get more used to this practice then you can stay and for
longer a word of warning that this particular method of meditating on the
third eye it’s not for everybody and so if you really dislike it just skip it
and try the other ones the fourth way of meditating of the third eye is by
visualization so you would close your eyes and you focus in this area not not
by moving the eyes to that area but just kind of seeing it and then you visualize
a symbol in that area any symbol that is relevant for you that is meaningful for
you it could be any image the simplest form of this practice is visualizing a
dot of light in the space between the eyebrows it doesn’t get any simpler than
that other symbols other images may be very
difficult to visualize unless you’re a very visual person then there may be
easy for you but a dot of light that is fairly simple to visualize and so the
meditation would be seeing that thought they’re imagining it to be
and holding on to that image for as long as you can and finally the fifth way of
meditating on the third eye is to imagine that you’re breathing in and out
through the space between the eyebrows as you’re breathing in you imagine that
the air is coming in through here as everything allottee imagine the air is
coming out through here and you can sync that with the mantra also if you like so
these are five simple ways to meditate on the third eye there are other more
elaborate practices but these are practices that you all can use and the
third eye is something that I personally use in my own practice when I am doing
my mantra practice I focus on the third eye and also many times during the day I
just remember this area and bring my attention there for a little bit and it
is very very calming and whether I mean I believe that the third eye exists and
I have experiences in this sense but whether it exists or not just that
experience it’s very very helpful very calming and it brings a greater sense of
control and mastery over the mind so in summary many meditation traditions
talk about the third eye and whether you believe in it or not it’s something that
you can try you can try the third eye meditations and see what it does to you
the third eye is usually meditated on the space between the eyebrows and
sometimes the space in the middle of the brain but that that one is a little bit
harder so focus on the space between the eyebrows and there are five simple ways
to meditate on the third eye the first is to just focus on the space between
the eyebrows and feel that area the second is by repeating the mantra
ohm while focusing on that area the third method is you close your eyes and
you gaze up and center to this area internally and only do that for a few
seconds because this is very strong the fourth method is by visualizing
something in the space between the eyebrows with your eyes closed the
easiest thing to visualize is a dot of life light and then the fifth method is
to imagine that you’re breathing in and out through this area so these are five
simple methods of meditating on the third eye I encourage you to try one or
